First Friday at the Flat Iron, Celebrating the New Wicker Park Bucktown Murals

Tonight, First Friday at the Flat Iron Arts Building, we will be hosting the party to celebrate the Orange Walls Murals Project. The six artists who were selected to create the murals will be in attendance to to discuss their art. This project is one of many art projects funded by WPB SSA#33 to beautify and to enhance the artistic nature of Wicker Park Bucktown. More to come.

And a thanks goes to the Wicker Park building owners who are supporting the arts and hosting these public murals on their outside walls. There will be a video presentation featuring the murals and the artists. To preview the murals please go to http://www.flickr.com/photos/wearewpb/.

I am Charlie Rees, a painter, a founder of the Flat Iron Artists Association and a long time Flat Iron resident artist. I have begun a new series, an attempt to capture an elegant sense of freedom and movement. Where color and line gracefully dance to a whimsical tune. James Monroe is a long time Flat Iron resident artist and a founder of the Flat Iron Artists Association. Wicker Park is an exciting Chicago neighborhood, teeming with people, young and old, hip, uber hip and non hip, urban and suburban. But at dawn, early in the morning, quiet.

The historic Flat Iron Arts Building is calm. Dawn's early light begins to play on the building's northern face while on the west, night still lingers on. This will change as the neighborhood and Coyote awake.

A cat, not a Coyote

Coyote is back, but a snapshot of recent history.

Early in 2008, the Around the Coyote organization set sail on a new course. No longer was the "Around the Coyote" art festival to be an open, Wicker Park Bucktown, neighborhood festival. Around the Coyote was to transform into a professional, serious, curatorial organization, "convincing the broader art community that they have moved up in quality and that they were becoming something more edgy and interesting"."

The end result...... early 2010, Around the Coyote "Bites the Dust"...... But the Coyote remained alive.

With the support of the neighborhood, in the fall of 2010, The Flat Iron Artist Organization brought the Coyote back by sponsoring "Beyond the Coyote", drawing several thousand visitors to the neighborhood.

This fall the Coyote is alive in Wicker Park. We continue to honor the artistic spirit of Wicker Park Bucktown and invite you to join us September 30th, October 1st and 2nd.

Regardless of budget difficulties facing public schools, there needs to be a recognition of the importance of arts. Rote teaching might help a student pass a test. Marketa Sivek, a long time Flat Iron artist, is donating two paintings to the Gilda's Art Auction, one from her Dress Series and another from her recent Landscape Series. Her Dress Series is highly acclaimed and in many private collections. The Landscape Series was inspired by a trip to Iceland. It doesn't depict any particular place.
